BOONE, NC - Hemp and CBD production has the potential to transform the agricultural economy in Appalachia. Throughout a region once dominated by tobacco, cannabis culitvation is becoming a viable option for farmers no longer able to turn a profit with traditional cash crops.
High Country Herbs, which was started by Kris Gupton (pictured) and his wife Heather Bryant, is one of the largest distributors in Western North Carolina. Based an hour south of Boone, North Carolina, in Lenior, the Kris and Heather's farm, High Country Herbs harvested nearly 200 lbs of CBD and upwards of 2,000 lbs of hemp biomass in 2019. Gupton is poised to expand his production from 2.5 acres of cultivated ground to over 6 acres in 2020.
