Ha Giang Wedding
Populated predominantly in the far north of Vietnam, the Tay people are the largest of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minorities, comprising around 10 percent of the population. Family is at the center of Tay culture, making weddings an extremely important event in the Tay community. Taking place over the course of two days, a traditional Tay wedding is held in the bride’s family’s house, with 100 extended family members in attendance. The first day consists of three meals of various dishes of pork and pickled vegetables, with family members playing endless rounds of Ta La, a Vietnamese card game, in between the meals. On the second day, the bride and groom are introduced during a precession around the main hall of the family’s house. Hours later, after more meals, card games and toasts of homemade rice wine, the couple are finally wed continuing a tradition has lasted over a thousand years.
