Sparring at the James Shuler Gym
Founded in 1994, the James Shuler Memorial Gym is one of Philadelphia’s premier boxing centers. The gym, located above a preschool in the West Powelton section of the city, is also an integral part of the community, providing structure to adolescents and teenagers in the neighborhood.
James Shuler was a native of Philadelphia and a two-time Middleweight Champion. In 1980, Shuler earned a spot on the US Olympic Boxing Team, however did not participate in the Games due to America's boycott of the 1980 Olympics, which were held in Moscow. Shuler died 6 years later in a motorcycle accident.
